Istanbul in brief

Istanbul is the largest city in Turkey and, because it is located precisely on the border dividing Europe and Asia, it is the only city in the world to span two continents. This international city displays the influences of both East and West.

Istanbul has a glorious past as the centre of both the Byzantine and Ottoman empires. The ancient part of the city is situated on a peninsula where the Bosporus ends and the Sea of Marmara begins. Running seven kilometres along the northern boundary of this old part of the city is an inlet known as the Golden Horn. This inlet is so deep that even fairly large ocean-going vessels can moor there.
