Practical informationPractical information

Gran Canaria’s airport is located in Telde, 18 kilometres from the capital, Las Palmas. The airport can be reached from the north or south via the GC-1 motorway. Buses also run from the airport. The number 60 to Las Palmas takes 30 minutes, costs €2.40 for a single journey and departs twice an hour from 6h15. Bus 66 to Faro de Maspalomas takes an hour, costs €3.30 for a single journey and departs once an hour from 7h20. There is a taxi rank at the arrivals hall and a journey costs around €25 to Las Palmas and €30 to Playa del Inglés. You can also hire a car.

Public transport

Gran Canaria has a good local bus network that serves the largest part of the island. If you want increased flexibility, it is better to hire a car. The roads are generally very good and there are good road markings.

Hiring a bicycle

If you are a fan of physical exercise, you can hire a bicycle for the day (from around €9.50 per day).

Taxis are usually not very expensive. They cost around €0.40 per kilometre and fixed charges apply for longer journeys.

Postal service

The main post office is located at Avenida Primero de Mayo 62, Las Palmas. Opening hours: Monday to Friday from 8h30 to 20h30 and Saturdays from 9h30 to 14h00.

Look on the door of a pharmacy for the closest pharmacy that offers an out-of-hours service.

Warning for tourists

Be careful whenever you buy cameras or electrical goods in the shops in the tourist regions. If the price seems too good to be true, something is probably not right. A lot of counterfeit goods are in circulation. Always ask for an international guarantee before you pay. Neither should you fall for the gimmicks by the timeshare sales representatives, who will try to sell you scratch cards. The prize that you have won, to their great surprise, can only be claimed if you go with them to listen to a timeshare sales talk. They will tell you that it will only take an hour and a half, but you should expect it to take at least double that amount of time.

Opening times

Shops are usually open from 9h30 to 13h30 and then again from 16h30 to 19h30. At the weekend, they are mostly open only on Saturdays from 9h30 to 13h30. The shops in the holiday regions are mostly open seven days per week.
