Cape Verde: the pearl on the West African coast
Ilha do Sal is the most northeastern island of Cape Verde. The name of the island literally translates as “island of salt”. That’s because the island was an important source of salt in the past. This is still apparent from the saltpans on the island, including the salt mines at Pedra de Lume. The small town of Santa Maria is located a little less than 20 kilometres south of the capital of Espargos. This fishing village is very popular with tourists, thanks in part to the wide range of facilities like bars and restaurants and its wide sandy beach. There is also plenty of nightlife to be enjoyed at the numerous bars and discos.
