Cape Verdeans love to cook with dried corn, an ingredient that is often found in the numerous dishes prepared by the locals. One of the island’s most famous dishes is ‘catchupa’, a stew made with beans, hominy and meat or fish. A typical Cape Verdean starter is ‘bstilla’, a savoury pastry stuffed with meat or fish.

Mateus is a famous restaurant in the centre of Santa Maria. If you’d like to try genuine Cape Verdean cuisine, this is the place to be. The fish dishes in particular are extremely popular. Live music is performed on a regular basis.
