Cypriot cuisine is quite rightly famous. Not only do its climate and soil conditions yield excellent produce, Cypriots have also added influences from Egyptian, Lebanese, Turkish, Greek and English cuisine to their cooking. Fish and meat are often prepared on the grill.

Try:

  • Meze: the Cypriot version of Spanish tapa. Some restaurants don’t serve anything else.
  • Kleftiko: this literally means ‘stolen’, referring to earlier times when cattle rustling was widespread. This is a leg of lamb that is prepared in the oven, wrapped in vine leaves.
  • Afelia: strips of pork marinated in red wine. Served with pilaf, small sautéed potatoes and possibly a (spicy) salad.
