In conjunction with the tourist attractions, a good many souvenirs are on sale. You can also visit a carpet or papyrus factory. These are enormous shops where demonstrations are given of the production process. Papyrus products can be found everywhere; along the street, it is often fake (banana leaf), in the shops it is often more expensive but genuine. Other possible souvenirs include copies of statuettes from Ancient Egypt, ethereal oils, leather goods and silver or gold jewellery. Although Friday is the Islamic day of rest, most shops are closed on Sundays.
