The old port of Heraklion

The old port of Heraklion lies to the left of the modern port. During the Venetian period this was an important commercial and military centre. The perfect spot for a nice romantic walk, especially at night.

The Koules Fort

This is really impressive and one of Heraklion’s special sights. It was built at the entrance to the Venetian port to protect it from attacs. At the sides, you can see fragments of the sculpted lions of St. Mark. The castle is open to the public. An open-air theatre has been installed at the top, used during the summer festivals held in the city. The name Koules is Turkish. The Venetians called it Rocca al Mare.

The Minoan Palace of Knossos

The archaeological site in Knossos lies some 5 km from the town, on a hill to the south-east of Heraklion, close to a small village with the same name. It is the largest and best-known centre of Minoan civilisation.
Bus: 2. regular scheduled service between Heraklion and Knossos.

Hersonissos

Hersonissos is Crete’s nightlife paradise. There are hundreds of bars, large hotels and welcoming restaurants. There are also fine beaches, especially Limanakia, and a number of very small bays. Ideal for sea, sun and pleasure, it is an hour’s drive from the centre of Heraklion. You can take the bus, which leaves from the station at the port. Kountourioti street, Limenos district.

Malia

There is much to do in Malia by day and night; there are many inns, pubs and discos and a beautiful beach. A perfect place for partying! An hour and a half’s drive from Heraklion; take the bus at the same spot as for Hersonissos.

Amoudara

Lies to the west of Heraklion and is the closest summer holiday resort. There are restaurants, pubs, cafés, music bars, gift shops and jewellers, several of the pubs are also at the beach’s edge. You can take the bus on Eleftherias Square.

Chania – Rethymnon

If you intend to spend longer than a week on Crete, then take the opportunity to visit two splendid cities on the island – two Venetian cities with fine natural beauty, ravines and highly traditional villages. Rethymnon lies 1.5 hours from Heraklion (by bus). Chania lies a 3 hours’ drive from Heraklion. You can take the bus to both destinations at the central bus station near the port.
