The old port of Heraklion
The old port of Heraklion lies to the left of the modern port. During the Venetian period this was an important commercial and military centre. The perfect spot for a nice romantic walk, especially at night.The Koules Fort
This is really impressive and one of Heraklion’s special sights. It was built at the entrance to the Venetian port to protect it from attacs. At the sides, you can see fragments of the sculpted lions of St. Mark. The castle is open to the public. An open-air theatre has been installed at the top, used during the summer festivals held in the city. The name Koules is Turkish. The Venetians called it Rocca al Mare.The Minoan Palace of Knossos
The archaeological site in Knossos lies some 5 km from the town, on a hill to the south-east of Heraklion, close to a small village with the same name. It is the largest and best-known centre of Minoan civilisation.Bus: 2. regular scheduled service between Heraklion and Knossos.
