The weather

In summer, it can be very warm on the islands, reaching temperatures of around 40°C. In December and January, it is colder and rains a lot. Spring and early autumn are the best months to visit the islands.

Time difference

Greece is 1 hour ahead of the Netherlands.


Greek, but English and sometimes German are also spoken in many tourist areas.


Payments are made using euros and there are plenty of cash machines available. Other methods of payment are credit cards and traveller’s cheques.




  • Bus: Greece has an excellent bus network; there are frequent connections between all major cities.
  • Train: only used as a means of tourist transport; trains do not come very frequently and are very slow.
  • Aeroplane: although you will not see very much of the country, it is a quick way to travel; almost all parts of the country can be reached by air on a daily basis.
  • Hired car or hired scooter: exploring the islands yourself in this way is possible in practically all parts.
