Portuguese food is cheap, delicious and plentiful. But you can of course also taste specific Madeira cuisine here, imbued with popular tradition. And although you can order delicious meat dishes, Madeirians often opt for fish such as cod, tuna and filet de espada (white fish).

Try:

  • Frango churasco: grilled marinated chicken with piri-piri spices
  • Espetada de vaca: large pieces of beef rubbed with garlic and salt, skewered on a laurel stick and grilled on smouldering wood chippings.
  • Estufada de carneiro: bubbling hot lamb stew full of fresh vegetables and potatoes, very tasty on cold days.
  • Bacalhau: dried, salted cod
  • Bolo de Mel: a delicious honey cake
  • Naturally, you should taste at least one of the four kinds of Madeira wines:
  • Sercial: amber-coloured dry wine often drunk as an aperitif before soup and fish courses.
  • Verdelho: tan-coloured, semi-dry wine drunk mainly with the main course.
  • Bual: full, nutty wine, a good accompaniment for cheeses and rich desserts.
  • Malmsey: very sweet wine, delicious with coffee.
