Practical informationPractical information

Lisbon's airport, Portela, lies close to the centre. Airport buses leave every 20 minutes. A ticket is valid on all buses, trams and mountain railways all day. A taxi to the centre takes approximately 20-30 minutes and costs more if you have a lot of luggage. The tariff is somewhat higher at night and at weekends.

Public transport

There is public transport everywhere in Lisbon: buses, underground trains, overground trains, ferries, trams and mountain railways. The latter two are the least efficient but the most enjoyable. The buses and underground function until 1 o'clock at night. There are also night buses but after hours the taxi is simplest.

You can stop a taxi on the street, get in at taxi ranks or order one by telephone. Empty taxis drive continuously through central Lisbon in large numbers, except during peak hours and when it rains. A tip is not mandatory but is appreciated.

The post offices are open from Mondays to Fridays from 09h00 to 18h00. The central post office at the Praça dos Restauradores is open longer.

A pharmacy is open around the clock in every neighbourhood (farmácia, with a green cross), according to a schedule shown in pharmacies' shop windows.

The public dentists' centres are not very expensive but the quality is not first-class either. There are Swedish and British dentists in the Clínica Europa in the Carcavelos district.
