Castelo de São Jorge

Not much is left of the old buildings of the original settlement but there is a castle. Tours are available here and at several other places. You will also find comfortable cafés with terrace and fantastic views.

Mosteiro dos Jerónimos

In Belém, a little to the west of the centre, along the river. This is Lisbon's and probably also the whole of Portugal's most important monument - a fine, large church with a monastery garden, built in the ornamental Manueline style early in the 16th century, when Portugal was a major sea power. There are various sights close by.

Museu do Azulejo

Devoted to typical Portuguese tiles, housed in a monastery which with its differing building styles and decoration offers a good overview of the country's history. One of the highlights is an enormous fresco of wall tiles showing Lisbon at the time of the great earthquake of 1755.

Parque das Nações

The area where Expo 98 was held has been successfully transformed into a centre for stock exchanges, leisure and culture. The many buildings that have been erected there since the Exhibition nearly overshadow such pearls as Siza Vieira's Portugal Pavilion and Santiago Calatrava's Oriente Station next to it.
