Ribeira

The “River Bank” district is where you can visit the winding little streets of the historic centre. Here dark shadowy paths are contrasted with the colourful gables of the many buildings. A fine place to reconnoitre both by day and by night – when the restaurants and clubs open their doors.

River cruises

Take one of the many river cruises that leave from Ribeira, or at the Ponte de Don Luis I close to the Vila Nova de Gaia in order to enjoy a relaxed tour and the city from the Douro. The Douro was formerly a fast-flowing river across which wine barrels were transported to the city, but dams have now created many peaceful small lakes from which you can enjoy some fine views of the Portuguese countryside.

Torre dos Clerigos

An 18th century tower build by the Italian artist Niccolo Nazzoni, 75 meters in height, offers a fantastic view once you have climbed the 200 steps to the top. Nazzoni is buried in the Baroque church at the foot of the tower.
Price: Access to the church is free. Entrance tickets for the tower cost € 1.
