To see
Castillo de Santa Bárbara
Walk up the Benacantil Mountain and visit the Castillo de Santa Bárbara. At a height of 166 metres, you will have a beautiful view over the city and the sea, all the way to the island of Tabarca. The old city was built along the road to the castle. During your walk you will see Roman ruins and medieval walls. In the castle you can find a museum that has a permanent exhibition of sculptures.
The island of Tabarca
Follow the example of the pirates and seek refuge on the island of Tabarca for a day. Boats depart from the harbour several times per day and the crossing takes an hour. Cars are not permitted. Take advantage of the opportunity to eat a traditional fish dish in the harbour.
Three museums
Casa de la Asegurada was built in the 17th century. It is now an art museum and is home to 20th century works of art by artists such as Gris, Miró and Picasso. The Archaeological museum is located in the town hall and houses a large collection of discoveries from the Bronze Age and the Classical Period. The Firework museum can be found in Santa Bárbara Castle and contains objects that have been salvaged from the annual firework festivals.
The mountain train
The ‘Lemon Express’ departs every hour from Alicante station to Denia. The route passes through mountain tunnels and over bridges and offers beautiful panoramic views. The journey takes a little over two hours.
