The city is renowned for its excellent tapas bars, serving a large number of creative and delicious snacks. Have lunch somewhere in the old town or in the cathedral neighbourhood, or go to one of the little restaurants around the Mercado (market). Puerta de Purchena is a fine place to go in the evenings, with the surrounding narrow streets full of popular restaurants and busy bars.

La Dulce Alianza

The wonderful cakes and pastries and melt-in-your-mouth chocolates are a real feast! Fit in with the chic crowd by drinking tea in this historical pastelería, and sit on the terrace watching the pedestrians walk by on the boulevard below. Also serves as an internet café. El Barril

A colourful café on the seafront, which also serves tapas. Address: Parque Nicolás Salmerón 7

Casa Puga

A classic – it’s old (1870), hams are hanging from the ceiling, and the wine menu is astounding. Address: Calle Jovellanos 7

El Quinto Toro

Tasty tapas in a pretty, traditionally tiled bar on the market square. Address: Calle Juan Leal 6

Bodeguilla Ramón

This has been a local favourite for years. Try the nearby Bodega El Ajoli as well. Specialises in sherry and pork dishes. Address: Calle Padre Alfonso Torres 4
