Menorca is the largest but one island of the Balearic group of islands, off the eastern coast of Spain. Menorca offers more than a hundred small bays and beaches, the most of which are pristine. Because of the major value of its landscape, the island has been placed on the UNESCO list of protected nature reserves. The north coast is rocky for the most part with shingle beaches and reddish sand. The south coast consists of chasms: humid areas with a micro-climate where you will find characteristic flora and fauna which are very different from the rest of the island. There is a great variety of plants on the island; in the dry areas (barrancs) there are more than two hundred varieties of plants. In addition, the island has been designated a “genetic reservoir” for a number of rare birds and animals such as eagles, the small vulture, falcons, kites and the vanishing water tortoise.
Menorca is also ideally suited for families with children. Many areas are car-free and the beaches slope gradually into the sea. Many bays with very peaceful little beaches are not directly accessible, so it is an adventure to go in search of such a spot on a hired bike or car.
