For shopping in Arab countries you are best off going to the souk (market). Allow time for the souk; if you are not prepared to drink tea or haggle with the vendors, you will not only pay too much but not really experience the souk. Monastir is not particularly large but it is less than half an hour’s drive to Sousse, Tunisia’s third city. The Medina (city centre) is certainly worth a visit; you shuffle through an enormous mass of people between small shops and stores. In the bazaar you can really buy anything: from leather jackets, shoes and bags to pottery, herbs and, of course carpets.
