Izmir is a paradise for shoppers. If you are looking for an outfit to make a splash in the evening or for handmade gifts to take home to your family, you will find just what you need.

If you are looking for a rather different shopping experience, go to the labyrinth called the bazaar. From Konak Square go in the direction of Anafartalar Caddesi. This is the main street where you find all kinds of dealers selling clothing, shoes and jewellery that you can use for an evening out.

The streets to the south of Anafartarlar Caddesi, especially Fevzipasa Bulgari, are one large feast of leather goods – something that Izmir is well-known for. Get a bag, jacket or belt, but don’t forget to bargain.

For antiques and traditional art and crafts there is no better place than the atmospheric Kizlaragasi Han. This covered market is a fine example of Ottoman architecture where you will find craftsmen who sell everything and a bit more – from copper kitchen utensils to kilim carpets. If you are looking for a nargile (Turkish water-pipe) to take home, Ilhan Etike is the best address.

If you don’t care for the bustle of the market and are looking for a rather quiet shopping experience, go to the boutiques on the Kordon promenade in Alsancak and along Cumhuriyet Avenue, close to Passport Iskelesi.
