The Bulgarian capital city, Sofia, has become increasingly popular in recent years. Growing numbers of tourists are discovering this city with its wonderful history, so now is a good time for a city trip to Sofia. Start, for example, at Eagles' Bridge, in the middle of the city centre. On the bridge stand four bronze eagles on obelisks. These are also called the guardian angels of Sofia. Fly to Sofia: rich history and trendy nightlife centre 

You can visit the orthodox Alexander Nevski Cathedral, which is hard to miss with its imposing appearance. Or go to the Ivan Vazov National Theatre, the oldest and possibly even most beautiful theatre in Bulgaria. If you love shopping, then you must go to Vitosha boulevard. In the evenings it is the nightlife centre in Sofia, with dozens of trendy bars and cafés.

Transport to/from the airport

Sofia Airport is 11 kilometres from Sofia’s city centre. The easiest way to travel to and from the airport is by metro or taxi.
  • Metro

    You can find the Sofia Airport metro station at Terminal 2. There you can take line 1 (Red Line) to the city centre. It takes about 20 minutes to travel to the city centre. A ticket for public transport costs 1 Bulgarian lev (about €0.50). Het 
  • Taxi

    Taxis fares are also affordable. A trip to the city centre costs no more than 20 Bulgarian lev (about €10). The airport recommends you travel with OK Supertrans. You will recognise them by the OK sticker, including a list of the official fares.

Transport in the city/region

Public transport in Sofia is well organised and affordable. Most people take the bus within the city. 
  • Metro

    The metro network in Sofia is made of two lines: the Red Line and the Blue Line. This will probably be expanded in the future. 
  • Bus

    Travel anywhere in Sofia by bus. The city has a modern bus station: Centralna Avtogara. From here, buses depart to other cities in the region. 
  • Taxi

    Taxis are easily affordable in Sofia, making them an excellent alternative to public transport. Do take care that the taxi driver is a reliable one. You can tell this by the offical taxi permit on the dashboard.

You need a valid passport or identity card.


Vaccinations are not compulsory. However, you are advised to get vaccinated against DTP and hepatitis A.

The currency used in Sofia is the Bulgarian lev (BGN).

Flight duration

The average flight from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol to Sofia is 2 hours and 40 minutes. The outbound and inbound flights may be shorter if the wind direction is favourable.
