The best sights in Faro

Breathe in the atmosphere of the Algarve and marvel at Faro’s many wonderful sights. We have made you a list of the best ones!

The Old City (Vila Adento)

Faro’s rich history has left us with many wonderful sights. The 2,000-year-old city walls dating from Roman times in the old section of Faro, known as Vila Adento, are definitely worth a visit during your citytrip in Faro. Other must-sees are the two Byzantine towers and the Arco da Vila, the main entrance to old Faro, which was proclaimed as a national monument in 1910.

Ilha Deserta

The Praia da Ilha Deserta (Deserted Island) beach is one of the ‘barrier beaches’ in the Parque Natural da Ria Formosa national park, where the dune area (small vegetated sand flats) ends and the sea begins. The sea water is clear and perfect for sailing and windsurfing. The beach can only be reached by boat from Faro. And if you’re lucky, you might even spot some protected bird species during the 20-minute trip.

Sight: Museu Marítimo Ramalho Ortigao

Museu Maritimo Ramalho Ortigao

Just like England, Portugal has a rich maritime history. The harbour master’s building in Faro houses the Maritime Museum, where you can find out all about traditional fishing techniques and admire the old ships from the times of the explorers. The Nau, an impressive traditional archetype of a galleon, has a central position in the museum.

Se Cathedral

Se Cathedral is one of the most breathtaking sights in Faro. This Christian church was destroyed by the English in the 16th century and later rebuilt and restored. This makes the current cathedral a motley collection of architectural styles. Only the clock towers and two groin vaults remain of the original cathedral.

Sight: Algarve Shopping Mall

Algarve Shopping Mall

If feel like shopping for a change, then this Portuguese city is the place to be. Visit the Algarve Shopping Mall for fashion at decent prices, the latest collections and, moreover, a top-notch service. Besides chains such as Zara Home, Massimo Dutti and Cortefiel, you will find an entire floor with restaurants and eateries. The best way to get to the mall is by public transport.
