The palm tree-covered island of Djerba does not quite have a desert climate. And that’s a good thing because the sun would become unbearable otherwise. The island has a pleasant Mediterranean climate, with temperatures that are always above 20 degrees in both summer and winter, perfect for relaxing at an outdoor café and exploring the island! Transport to/from the airport

Djerba’s airport is located about 8 km from the centre of its capital Houmt Souk. You can travel to/from the airport by taxi or bus.
  • Taxi

    The taxi is the fastest way to get to the centre. Within 15 minutes you can be amazed by everything you see in one of the souks (markets). The taxi journey costs about 9 Tunisian Dinar (TND).
  • Bus

    The bus from the airport goes to the capital city Houmt Souk. The buses do not have fixed times. 

Transport in the city/region

Travel anywhere within Djerba: 
  • Bus

    The bus is the cheapest way to travel on Djerba and you can easily explore the island by bus. Taxis are a better option for short distances.
  • Taxi

    The most convenient way to explore the island of Djerba is by taxi. The fares are cheap and you get to your destination quickly. They are recognisable by their yellow colour. 

Important information

  • It is recommended to be vaccinated for Hepatitis A and DTP. This is not obligatory.
  • About 96% of Tunisia’s population are Muslim so topless sunbathing is not appreciated. Make sure that you are decently covered if you visit any places of worship.
  • Bringing Tunisian Dinar into or out of the country is strictly prohibited. You can obtain money from an ATM machine and pay with credit cards and traveller’s cheques.

You need a passport that is still at least valid for at least 6 months when you arrive.

There is no time difference between Djerba and the Netherlands in winter. In summer, it is 1 hour earlier on Djerba than it is in the Netherlands.


The currency used in Djerba is the Tunisian Dinar (TND).

The flight to Djerba takes about 2 hours and 45 minutes. The outbound and inbound flights may be shorter if the wind direction is favourable.
