Special luggage

Whether you go braving the ski slopes in Austria, hit some golf balls on the green in Portugal or go surfing in the south of France; with us you can always book your special luggage easily and inexpensively. It is also possible to bring your four-footed friend aboard the aircraft. You can transport your dog or cat in the cabin or in our special heated section in the hold. You can book special luggage and pets easily in advance via My Transavia. 

Do I have to indicate in advance that I have special luggage?

  • Luggage that needs to be reported prior to the flight: golf equipment, winter sports equipment, diving gear, fishing equipment, water sports equipment, hang glider, bicycle and sporting weapons.
  • You can report special luggage online when booking your flight or afterwards in My Transavia or by contacting our Service Centre.
  • If you booked your flight via a travel organisation, inform that organisation via My Transavia of your special luggage request from 3 weeks to 48 hours prior to the departure of your return flight. Since only a limited amount of equipment can be taken on board, we recommend reporting your special luggage to your travel organisation when making your booking.
  • If you booked your flight via Transavia Groups&Incentives, you can report your special luggage by e-mail to groepen@transavia.com.
In connection with luggage screening, we ask that you check your special luggage in as early as possible. The check-in desks at Schiphol Airport open 2 1/2 hours prior to departure. At other airports, these desks open 2 hours before departure.

Travelling with golf equipment

Your golfing equipment may weigh up to 15 kg and consists of:

  • 1 golf bag holding up to 14 clubs
  • 1 pair of golf shoes

Can I take my pet with me in the cabin?

You may take along a kennel measuring up to 47 × 30 × 27 cm and weighing no more than 10 kg (including the pet).

For your dog or cat, you may bring a kennel of up to 75 kg (including your pet) and max. 102x69x76 cm in the hold.

Travelling with winter sports equipment

If you are only taking ski boots with you, they can be transported in your hand luggage. Keep in mind the maximum weight and size limits. If you are taking winter sports equipment (skis, sled, snowboard, etc.) with you, we ask that you check in this luggage as early as possible because of baggage screening requirements. The check-in desk at Schiphol Airport opens 2 1/2 hours prior to departure. At other airports, this desk opens between 1 1/2 and 2 hours before departure. Checking in your bags early helps make sure that all luggage and equipment is transported to the aircraft on time.

The maximum weight limit for your winter sports equipment is 15 kg and it may consist of:

  • 1 pair of skis, 1 pair of shoes, 1 pair of poles, ski helmet or
  • 1 snowboard, 1 pair of shoes, ski helmet
  • 1 sled measuring no larger than 120 x 50 x 40 cm, ski helmet

You may bring along an avalanche rescue backpack, 1 per passenger, equipped with a pyrotechnic trigger mechanism containing less than 200 mg net of division 1.4S and less than 250 mL of compressed gass on division 2.2. The backpack shall be packed in such a manner that it cannot be accidentally activated. The airbags within the backpacks shall be fitted with pressure relief valves.

Travelling with diving equipment

There are two options for taking diving gear:

  • You take the diving gear in addition to your regular luggage. In this case, you pay the special rate for sports equipment, provided that the diving gear is packed separately. You simply need to notify the airline that you are bring this gear with you when purchasing your ticket or afterwards. The rate is €29 per flight for diving gear weighing no more than 15 kg. If you exceed the maximum weight limit of 15 kg, the regular luggage rules apply.
  • You take the diving gear inside your regular luggage. In this case, you do not have to pay extra for the equipment.

Keep in mind that the standard rates for hold luggage will apply, in addition to the following conditions:

  • Diving tanks are only accepted if there is enough space.
  • Harpoons and knives must be transported in a hard container or bag as hold luggage.
  • Due to the pressure on board, your diving cylinders must be completely empty.
  • If you want to bring along an underwater lamp, you may transport this in your hand luggage if the lamp or battery is removed.
  • LED diving lamps may only be transported if they are disassembled.
  • If you want to take along a harpoon in your diving equipment, please know that we do not accept harpoons that use nitrogen.

In order to prevent the possibility of decompression sickness, you may not dive during the 24 hours previous to your flight.

Your fishing equipment may weigh up to 15 kg and consists of:

  • 3 rods
  • 1 pair of waiders

Travelling with water sports equipment

Your water sport equipment may weigh up to 32 kg. You can bring a surf board, wave board, kite board or body board.

  • Mast + board should not be longer than 3.60 metres.
  • If the surfboard/waveboard, etc. is packed in a bag, you are not allowed to add clothes and/or any other items to this.

Travelling with a hang glider

Please notice that the cylindrical frame of your hang glider may not exceed a length of 3.60 metres. If your hang-glider is packed in a bag, you may not add clothes and/or any other items to this. Your hang-glider may weigh up to 32 kg.

Travelling with a bicycle

Your bike may weigh up to 32 kg. When transporting your bike, please observe the following safety precautions:

  • Due to the pressure on board, the tires of your bike need to be empty or nearly empty.
  • The pedals must be upturned or disassembled.
  • The steering wheel must be turned lengthwise.
  • The use of a bicycle box or case is highly appreciated!
  • Bicycle pumps that work on CO2 cartridges are not accepted.

You can also transport an electric bike. Please note that the bike should have a dry battery. The following conditions apply for this:

  • Remove the battery and wrap the connectors with tape to prevent a short circuit.
  • The battery does not need to be packed separately.
  • The battery may only be transported in your hand luggage.
  • If you have a bicycle with a lithium battery, this cannot exceed 300 Wh. Unfortunately, batteries of over 300 Wh are not allowed on board.

What are the rules for musical instruments?

You may take a small musical instrument with you as hand luggage. All musical instruments that (including protective cover) are no larger than 25 x 117 x 38 cm and weigh no more than 10 kg may be transported in the cabin. This applies to, for example, a viola, violin, flute, clarinet, bugle or trumpet. If you want to take a large musical instrument (such as a cello) with you, contact our Service Centre to book an extra seat. The maximum permitted size, including the protective cover, is 110 x 44 x 65 cm and the maximum permitted weight is 20 kg.

Keep in mind that there is a hand luggage limit of one piece per passenger.

Rules for special luggage

Sporting weapons
Sporting weapons and ammunition may only be transported as hold luggage and must be reported to the Service Centre no later than 72 hours before departure. A number of conditions also apply to the transport of sporting weapons. Contact the Service Centre for more information.

Wedding gown or suit
If you would like to take a wedding gown or suit with you, it will be considered hand luggage. Keep in mind that it is not possible to hang your gown or suit on board of our planes. It is possible to book an extra seat via our Service Centre.


It is possible to take an urn with you on board. Keep the following in mind:
  • The urn can be taken as hand luggage if it is no larger than 55 x 40 x 25 cm and weighs no more than 10 kg (keep in mind that you can only take 1 piece of hand luggage with you). 
  • The urn must be properly packed.
  • You are required to bring a death certificate with you. You are also required to bring a statement from the crematorium with you, stating that the ashes in the urn are of the deceased. 
  • You may not open the urn on board.
Walking poles
You can take your Nordic walking poles or trekking poles with you on board Transavia flights. These are transported as hold luggage. Make sure that they are properly packed (preferably in a suitcase or sports bag). They should also have protective caps on the ends. You do not need to drop off the poles in a separate bag.

Lithium batteries
It is permitted to take lithium batteries with you on the flight. There are a number of conditions, however, that must be met:
  • Loose lithium batteries, such as rechargeable or AA batteries for laptops and DVD players, may only be transported as hand luggage for reasons of safety on board. In addition, they must be packed in the original packaging. If you no longer have the original packaging, insulate the battery contacts by covering them with tape and pack each battery in a separate plastic bag. 
  • Lithium batteries for use in an electric wheelchair may only be transported as hand luggage for reasons of safety on board. Remove the batteries, insulate the battery contacts with tape and take them as hand luggage.
Important: You may only bring a maximum of two loose lithium batteries with up to 160 watt-hours per battery as hand luggage. 
Important: For safety reasons, we do not accept any lithium battery powered ‘self-balancing devices’, such as hoverboards, airboards, oxboards, e-skates, waveboards or U-Runners.

You may take a drone with you on board our flights. The following conditions apply:
  • You may only take your drone as hand luggage if no larger than 55 x 40 x 25 cm and no heavier than 10 kg.
  • Does your drone have a lithium battery? If so, you must transport the battery in your hand luggage, even if checking in the drone.
  • You may take a maximum of two batteries with you. The maximum capacity per battery is 160 kWh.
The batteries must be transported in the original packaging. Do you no longer have this packaging? Insulate the poles with tape and pack the batteries separately in plastic bags.
