After a less than 3-hour flight you will step into a whole new world. Whether you fly to Granada or Verona, or somewhere else entirely, you're guaranteed to tumble into an entirely different culture. For example, experience Spanish life in Granada. While we're often busy in the Netherlands, people there go at their own tempo. A drink here, tapas there, while the sun rays caress your face. How amazing is that! The city has many Moorish influences, with the Alhambra as the highpoint.
In the Italian city of Verona you will enjoy la dolce vita in a different way. While tapas culture reigns in Granada, Verona is known for its Amarone della Valpolicella wine, and dishes like risotto and polenta. The Roman amphitheatre Arena di Verona en Castelveccio is one of the famous sights here.
Europe has an incredibly rich history. How about a trip to Athens, one of Europe's oldest cities? The Acropolis and Parthenon are world famous due to their historic significance, architectural beauty, and cultural impact. Stroll through the old religious centre of the city and enjoy the amazing view of the city and sea. But the city centre itself is also teeming with the relics of antiquity. From the Agora and the Temple of the Olympian Zeus to the Library of Hadrianus and the Stadion Panathinaiko.
Or, fly to Split. It's a bit more modern, but still full of history. Visit Diocletian's Palace, built in the 4th century AD. This imposing palace has a combination of Roman and Mediaeval architecture. Or, discover the Split Archaeological Museum, where you will really learn everything about this city's rich history. From Roman sculptures and mosaics to objects from Greek and Egyptian times.
Delicious food is part of holidays. Each country has its own local cuisine and specialities. Spanish and Basque cuisine in Bilbao and Greek cuisine in Thessaloniki are absolutely worth trying. In Bilbao, the local dish you have to try is pintxos. These are small bites served on a piece of bread with a skewer. The pintxos can be topped with anything, from cheeses and seafood to cold cuts and vegetables.
Greek cuisine also has many well-known specialities. From souvlaki and gyros to bougatsa and loukoumades. But a typical dish from Thessaloniki that you really must try is Trigona Panoramatos. This is a traditional dessert from Thessaloniki that consists of triangular filo pastries with a sweet cream filling and topped with honey and chopped almonds. A real treat for those with a sweet tooth.
Besides ages-old culture and local delicacies, you will also find magnificent nature and landscapes just a few hours' flight away. From giant mountains to breathtaking coastlines, Europe has it all! Fly to the nature-rich Bergerac in France's Dordogne region, for example. From here, visit la Roque Saint-Christophe. In this 80-metre-high and no less than 1,000-metre-long slot in a rock, you'll find all kinds of rock dwellings from prehistoric times. You will also find Goufre de Padirac after about a 2-hour drive. This is a 100-metre-deep cave where a river still runs at the bottom under the rocks, which you can cross by boat. It's truly a natural wonder!
When talking about Reykjavik, you immediately think of adventure in nature, because this country is beautiful and has lots of extraordinary natural phenomena. Grab a car and follow the Golden Circle route. This will take you past the famous Geysir geysers, where water spurts out of the ground every few minutes. During your road trip, stop at the Gullfoss waterfall and Diamond Beach, where you walk between giant ice floes. For some relaxation, unwind in the natural geothermal pools of the Blue Lagoon.
