Croatia may not be the first place you think of for a sunny holiday and yet, the coast is stunningly beautiful. And the great thing is, because many of the most beautiful cities are along the coast, it warrants a road trip! After a day in the car you can go for a refreshing swim in the crystal clear water. If you’d prefer something more active, the Adriatic Sea is perfect for diving, wind or kite surfing.
As soon as you arrive in Croatia, you feel the country’s rich history. You find yourself among the ancient ruins, buildings and castles. In Rijeka you can climb the 550 steps to Trsat Castle. Besides the amazing Croatian coastline, the country has over 1,200 islands. Some are no bigger than a rock, but many are more than worth a visit. Each island has its own character: so, nature lovers often go to Plavnik, Susac or Kornati. And Losinj is known for dolphin spotting. Tip: Hire a jet ski, boat or catamaran in a coastal town and visit the islands off the coast.
Many know Croatia due to the fantastic festivals organised in the country. And with good reason, Croatia has even been voted Europe’s best destination for music festivals! Why? Famous festivals are the Outlook Festival, Ultra Europe, Dimensions Festival… And if there doesn’t happen to be a festival on when you go to Croatia, no worries. You can dance to your heart’s content in the bustling nightlife.
Croatia has stunningly beautiful greenery and numerous spectacular waterfalls and nature parks. For instance, from Zadar you can travel to Plitvice National Park in 1 1/2 hours. There’s almost too much to see in one trip. Decide what you would like to see and fly to your favourite destination. So, what are you waiting for?
You want to eat well when on holiday and the Croatian cuisine will not let you down. It is all about fresh, seasonal ingredients, traditions and ancient recipes. Encircled by the Adriatic Sea, along the coast you can of course enjoy freshly grilled fish and light dishes suited to the warm weather. Travelling further inland, you will notice more meat and casseroles on the menu. Local wine with your meal? No problem. Or even a beer, a pint won’t cost you much at all. Cheers!
Want a bit of action? Croatia will not disappoint on that front either. If you want, you could do something different every day of your holiday. It’s a great place for wind and kite surfing, sailing and diving. Or even rafting on one of the many rivers. When you’ve had enough of the water, you can hire a bike or put on your hiking boots.
