More sustainable taxiing, more energy-efficient flying and reducing CO2 emissions. At Transavia, we contribute to a more sustainable world. We do everything we can to make your trip as sustainable as possible. But it’s fair to say that we’re not there yet. Curious about what we are already doing? Discover what we do before and during your flight for a better future.

What we do before your flight

Even before you step on board, we have already taken various steps to make your trip more sustainable. Every day, we take steps forward by doing a lot of research. We use the results to take you to your destination in a more sustainable way.

We are working on new, more sustainable aircraft

In December 2021, we had good news: we ordered our first sustainable aircraft from Airbus! In 2023, we will take delivery of our first aircraft from this new fleet, the Airbus 320neo. The new fleet of more sustainable aircraft flies 50% quieter and saves around 20% fuel per seat compared to the older version of the Airbus. This reduces up to 15% CO2 emissions.

Towards more sustainable taxiing

Did you know that a lot of fuel is also consumed during taxiing? That is why we are taking part in a pilot in which a special towing vehicle, the Taxibot – with electric and diesel engines – brings the planes to the runway. Research shows that sustainable taxiing results in fuel savings of up to 65%. Our goal is to be able to taxi completely sustainably at Schiphol from 2030.

We clean the engines

Cleaner engines ensure a safer flight, but also reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. External pollution such as smog causes deposits on the engines. With the innovative water-wash equipment, running engines wash themselves clean in a closed water system.

What we do during your flight

Together, we are aiming for your good trip. That is why we do everything we can during the flight to reduce the impact of your trip on the environment. This way we take steps forward and ensure a really good trip.

We use more sustainable fuel

Since 2022, we have been mixing our airplane fuel with Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). SAF is made from various sustainable sources, such as waste and residues from forestry and agriculture. By replacing 0.9% of our fuel with SAF, we reduce CO2 emissions by at least 75% compared to fossil kerosene. Our goal is to use 14% SAF in 2030.

Increasingly energy-efficient flights

By doing research, we discover new ways to fly more energy-efficiently. As a result, we reduce our C02 emissions. For example, our pilots use the Wind Update feature. This measures the most current wind information and determines whether it is more favourable to fly higher or lower. And we are testing the 'fuel advisor' system, which allows pilots to use fuel as smartly as possible.

Flying more economically and faster with split winglets

In order to fly more sustainably, we continually improve parts of the aircraft. For example, the split winglets. This extension of the wing lifts upwards and downwards at the tip, enabling us to fly more economically and faster. With the Split Scimitar Winglets, we save up to a hundred tons of kerosene per aircraft.

We are working on a more sustainable interior

We are also making things more sustainable inside the aircraft, for example with seats made of e-leather. This artificial leather is barely distinguishable from animal leather, but is much lighter and easier to maintain. This way we save fuel and costs for maintenance.

Lighter carbon brake discs

We also make more sustainable choices when braking. We do this with carbon brake discs: this material is just as strong, but lighter than steel. This reduces CO2 emissions annually by 2,615 tonnes per aircraft.

We separate waste on board

We believe it is important to take steps towards reducing residual waste on board. That is why we have been separating PMD waste (plastic, metal and drink cartons) on board since December 2022. As a result, we expect to reduce 50% of our residual waste in the short term. This enables us to take small steps towards achieving our Zero Waste target by 2030.

Together, we make the world more sustainable. We're not there yet, but every little bit helps. Curious about what you can do?
