Book a ticket to Sal: the most northerly island of Cape Verde, just off the coast of West Africa. Sun worshippers can relax on the snowy white beaches on the turquoise ocean. The beaches are the venue for international kite surfing and windsurfing competitions. The lovely gentle breeze creates perfect waves. Stroll to the pier, the centre point of the beach, in the morning. The fishermen come to shore with their catch which you can then order all over the island. Nowhere else is there such a wide choice of fresh fish! On Sal’s south coast is the lively town of Santa Maria with colourful restaurants and bars with swinging music.

Sal was once an important salt mining island, and traces of the mining still remain. A dormant volcano crater lies at the village of Pedra Luma. Transport to/from the airport

The airport on Sal is about a 20 minute drive from the island’s most southerly town, Santa Maria. You can travel to/from the airport by taxi, bus or train.
  • Taxi

    There are taxis at the arrival hall to bring you to your destination. It takes about 10 minutes to drive to the authentic villages of Palmeira and Beirona. The trip from the airport to pleasant Santa Maria takes about 20 minutes.

Travel anywhere within Sal:
  • Taxi

    You can hail a taxi anywhere on the island of Sal. Licenced taxis are recognisable by their blue light and yellow horizontal stripe. It is recommended to agree a price before you leave. Otherwise you may pay more for your taxi journey.

Tip: You can also travel with an ‘aluguer’ instead of by taxi on Sal. These are local transit vans that leave when they are three quarters full. They are a lot cheaper than taxis, but the trip takes longer.

Important information

  • You need a visa to enter the Cape Verde islands.
  • The sun is blazing in Sal, especially in summer. Use a suntan lotion with a high UV factor.
  • The tap water in Sal is not drinkable. It is recommended to buy bottled water.

Passport and visa

The rules regarding the validity of a passport for travel to Cape Verde may vary. To ensure that you do not encounter any problems, make sure that your passport is valid for at least six months after your return to the Netherlands. Apart from a valid passport, you also need a visa. You need to apply for a visa before travelling to Cape Verde. Apply online or in person at the Consulate of Cape Verde in Rotterdam.

Duration of flight

The flight to Sal is about 7 hours. The flight takes a little longer on the outbound journey from Amsterdam because of a short stop on the way.
