It takes just 2 hours to fly from Eindhoven to Bilbao, the capital of the province of Biscay. This city is located in the autonomous Basque Country. The best time to visit Bilbao is in the spring and summer. Temperatures range from 20 to 30°C from May to September. Bilbao is also an ideal starting point for visiting other cities. Pamplona, famous for its bullfighting, and the coastal resort of San Sebastián are both easily accessible from Bilbao. But there’s plenty to enjoy in Bilbao itself. For example, Aste Nagusia takes place at the end of August. This is the city’s most spectacular festival, offering a lively atmosphere and a chance to experience Basque culture. The festival lasts for 9 days and is definitely worth a visit.

What you should know on arriving in Bilbao

Land at Bilbao Airport after a comfortable flight. The airport is unique in that it is shaped like a dove. From the airport, you can reach both the old and new centres of Bilbao in about 30 minutes by bus. A taxi or hire car will take about 15 minutes. Once in the city, you can easily get around on the bus, metro and tram. You’ll need a Barik card for that, an electronic card where you can load credit to use public transport: it’s a cheap way to explore the entire city.

Casco Viejo, the Old Town, is a great starting point in Bilbao. Here, you can sample pintxos, tapas with a Basque twist, and enjoy a glass of txakoli, a local white wine with a light and refreshing taste. One of the city’s notable landmarks is the Basilica of Begoña. 

Bilbao and art go hand in hand, with the Guggenheim Museum being the city’s biggest attraction. Art lovers can admire a large collection of modern works here but the building made of glass and titanium and the giant surrealistic spider are also worth seeing. Be sure to visit the Teatro Arriaga and embark on an impressive guided tour. In this theatre, you’ll go backstage, look at beautiful costumes and explore the special boxes: private seating areas with a perfect view of the stage. 

At the Mercado de la Ribera, you can discover local delicacies and traditional dishes. Treat yourself to txangurro (a stuffed crab dish) or bacalao a la Vizcaína (cod prepared in a traditional sauce). Then take the funicular cable car from the city to the top of Mount Artxanda, where you’ll enjoy a beautiful view of the city. If you feel like rolling out your towel on the beach after all those activities, you can take the metro and be at Playa de Ereaga in 20 minutes. It’s also a fantastic spot for surfing!
