From the airport, you can reach both the old and new centres of Bilbao in about 30 minutes by bus. A taxi or hire car will take about 15 minutes. Once in the city, you can easily get around on the bus, metro and tram. You’ll need a Barik card for that, an electronic card where you can load credit to use public transport: it’s a cheap way to explore the entire city.

At the Mercado de la Ribera, you can discover local delicacies and traditional dishes. Treat yourself to txangurro (a stuffed crab dish) or bacalao a la Vizcaína (cod prepared in a traditional sauce). Then take the funicular cable car from the city to the top of Mount Artxanda, where you’ll enjoy a beautiful view of the city. If you feel like rolling out your towel on the beach after all those activities, you can take the metro and be at Playa de Ereaga in 20 minutes. It’s also a fantastic spot for surfing!
