Cultural and historic sights in Marseille
Marseille is bursting with art and culture. The city has various museums such as the MuCEM and Palais Longchamp. There are also several historical sights that are more than worth a visit. You can go to the beautiful and impressive churches of Notre-Dame de la Garde and Cathédrale de la Major. Also, make sure you go to Marseille’s old marina: Vieux Port. It is a lovely harbour where you can visit two ancient forts from 1660. Louis XIV built what was an important harbour at the time to protect Marseille from invaders. Nowadays, Vieux Port is a great place for tourists. Stroll past the beautiful yachts and enjoy a drink on one of the terraces along the water.
The beaches and nature of Marseille
Marseille is famous for its fantastic city beaches. Choose what you like: sand or pebbles, rocky coves or a beach with a grassy strip. The most well-known beaches are the Prado beaches in the 7th and 8th arrondissement on the Promenade Georges Pompidou. They’re suitable for children and a great place for windsurfing.
Calanques National Park
In search of some action? Then go to the Calanques National Park. You’ll find Calanques between Marseilles and the town of Cassis. Many people consider this to be the most beautiful natural area of the Provence. The Massif des Calanques region has rugged rocky mountains, an array of bays with an azure-blue sea and gorgeous beaches. It is a wonderful place to relax, unwind and enjoy the breathtaking landscape. The area is also great for hiking, walking, cycling and sailing. The high cliffs provide a spectacular view over the bays in the park. In short, if you want to take a break from the city and explore the area, then this is the place to go!
