Pau
Two worlds rolled into one
Your trip to Pau starts with a stroll along one of many narrow streets in the city. As you walk, you’ll pass cosy restaurants, lovely boutiques and a variety of museums. If you pay close attention, you’ll see the occasional space invader from the 1978 arcade game on the fronts of some of the buildings. That’s because the residents of this city are crazy about street art. If you also love art, then you simply cannot leave out a visit to the ‘Atelier Ambulant’. The Boulevard des Pyrénées is another place where you’ll see two different worlds meeting. Enjoy a drink here and take in the view of palm trees and snow-topped mountains.
Château de Pau
The highpoint of any visit to Pau is the 14th century castle. The castle is the birthplace of King Henry IV of France, and it was also home to Napoleon Bonaparte. It’s currently open as a museum and as you admire the various works of art and wall coverings, you’ll feel as if you’ve gone back to the Middle Ages. Once you’ve been around the castle, find a high point and you’ll be treated to an amazing view of the city.
