The Algarve
The Algarve owes its name to the period when the Moors occupied the Iberian peninsula. At the time, the region was called “Gharb al-Ândalus”, which means “the western part of Andalusia”. The Arabic word “Al-Gharb” means “the west”.

Historical Faro
Faro is the proud capital of the Algarve and an excellent destination for a city trip. The historic centre, also known as Cidade Velha, is a fascinating place to stroll around. Surrounded by the old city walls you’ll come across narrow cobbled streets, squares and historic buildings. One of the historic centre highlights is the Faro cathedral, called Sé de Faro, which was built in the 13th century.
About 10 kilometres south of the city centre lies Ilha de Faro, a stunning island in the Ria Formosa lagoon, where you can unwind on kilometres of golden sandy beaches and soak up the warm Algarve sunshine. The water here is clear and inviting, perfect for swimmers and watersport lovers alike.
Faro is located at the edge of the Ria Formosa natural park, a protected area featuring unique ecosystems and biodiversity. Walk past lagoons, salt planes, swamps, islands and canals, and come across a wide range of bird species, such as migratory birds that visit this place during their travels. A boat trip is a great way to explore the park, as it allows you to enjoy the beautiful natural environments and bird life. The park has several hiking trails and viewpoints for you to explore as well.
