Ajaccio is the picturesque capital of the island of Corsica and will not disappoint. Here you can find a beautiful, large marina and the stunning bays will make you feel you are in the Côte d’Azur. It’s a wonderful place to be! At the same time, you can also dive into its history. Ajaccio is the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte and this is visible everywhere. There are museums, statues, and even streets named after him across the city. His birth house has been turned into a museum, which is a great place to visit.
Activities in and around Ajaccio
Alongside the historical attractions about Napoleon, you can also find famous cathedrals and the citadel that used to protect the city. The citadel is particularly worth a visit. If you need a little relaxation afterwards, you can kick back on one of the beaches near the citadel. You will also find good places here to sail, surf, snorkel or dive. Naturally, you can also just enjoy the sun and take a nap. If you have a slightly more adventurous disposition and you like walking, you can take long walks and hikes through the wooded hills and mountains near Ajaccio. Our tip is to visit the Scandola nature reserve to the north of the city which has been crowned a UNESCO world heritage site. We definitely recommend this nature reserve if you love flora and fauna.
Road trip across Corsica
If you’d like to discover the remainder of the island, Ajaccio is a good place to start your journey of discovery across Corsica. You can find a lot of amazing and varied nature on the island. For instance, the west of the island is known for its forests and mountain tops. For the most stunning beaches and sea views, it’s best to head to the north and east of the island. Keep your eyes peeled as part of Corsica is a protected nature reserve, where you can spot ibex, eagles, and rare plants and flowers. You can walk through the hills along a special walking trail, the Grande Randonnée no. 20 (GR20). You can also enjoy yourself here if you are a mountain biker. If you’d rather relax on the beach, you can visit a different beach every day. There’s more than enough to see and do!
