Strasbourg
Strasbourg, or the ‘town at the crossing of roads’, is the capital of the famous Elzas and it is located in the North East of France. It is an ideal destination for a short city break. Strasbourg houses several important European political bodies. Besides these political sights, this French culinary city has more than enough things to see and do. Check them out below.
Historic city centre on an island
Strasbourg has a charming old city centre with many alleyways, lovely outdoor cafes and bridges across the River III, which connect the city’s various neighbourhoods. You can wander through the little streets but you can also see a lot of the city on a sightseeing boat. You experience the city in an entirely different way from the water. And that is certainly the case in Strasbourg, as the old city centre is an island (Grande Île) you can sail around.
A mix of German and French influences
There are plenty of sights to see in the French Strasbourg, such as the city’s cathedral - Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Strasbourg. But actually, the entire old centre is a sight in itself. You can also climb the impressive cathedral which will reward you an amazing view over the city. A remarkable thing about Strasbourg is the two different architectural styles in the city: German and French. This is because the city changed hands from Germany to France a number of times. You will notice that by the local dishes that seem more German than French on occasion and by the fact that European institutions are located here. Indeed, the Benelux countries, France, German and Italy, couldn’t decide in which country to establish the institutions. Strasbourg therefore seemed perfect due to its history and multilingualism.
French indulgence: wine region and delicious food
If you love wine then you are in the right place in Strasbourg. Typical winners from Elzas are Riesling, Gewürtztraminer and Pinot. The wine also reflects the German and French influences. There are many interesting wine cellars in the city where you can discover and sample the wines. And an added bonus, there is a wine route well worth your while at a stone’s throw from the city: ‘route du vins d’alsace’. Elzas also has many lovely restaurants where you can try popular dishes such as Flammkuchen/Tarte flambée or Sauerkraut/Choucroute. No matter whether you order in French or German, you will be served the same culinary feast.
Strasbourg: the ideal walking city
Want to take a break after all the food and wine? Then there are plenty of other things to keep you entertained in this city. On a nice day, a walk along the III river is a lovely route. There is a path and many benches where you can catch some sun. Does that take your fancy? Then also make sure you visit Quai des Bateliers, where you can watch the boats sail into the city. And while you are taking a walk anyway, go towards Barrage Vauban. This is a fort, covered bridge and dam in one. You can walk over the dam to the other side of the water or cross under cover. Don’t forget to climb the stairs to the top for a breathtaking view over the city. From the top, you can see three bridges and four towers that were originally built to protect the city.
