Here are five places you want to visit. Don’t hesitate and go for it!
Start your trip in Pisa
As soon as you land at the airport of Pisa, your holiday starts! This Italian city is most famous for its leaning tower, but it has a lot more to offer. The city is surrounded by ancient city walls and is divided in two parts by the Arno river. The central point is the Square of Miracles (Piazza dei Miracoli) where you can do lots of sight-seeing. In this fascinating city you’ll find beautiful churches and old buildings, such as the Pisa Cathedral (Duomo) and the Pisa Baptistery. Feeling peckish after stretching your legs? Take a seat on one of the many terraces and be surprised by the delicious Italian cuisine.
Picturesque Lucca
This ancient town has an eventful history, the remains of which you can still find in the city today. For example, take the old and intact 4.5 kilometre city wall, where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the historic sights. After following the city wall, visit the most beautiful squares of Lucca by foot or bicycle. The Piazza dell’Anfiteatro is famous because of its narrow, sunny-yellow painted houses which are arranged in the shape of the theatre that used to be there. Or go to the Piazza Frediano with the famous and stunning Basicila San Frediano. Can’t get enough of the views? Climb one of the two towers of Lucca.
Hart van Toscane: Florence
Florence (or ‘Firenze’) is known as the heart of the Italian region of Tuscany. Which is why it deserves its place in Tuscany’s list of must-visits. Florence is a charming and historic city with several squares, basilicas, and cathedrals and is a feast for the eyes. Don’t miss the iconic Ponte Vecchio, the ancient bridge and historic city monument. This bridge offers spectacular views of the city and is one of the most photographed sights of the city. Feel like winding down after the hustle and bustle of the city? Visit the Boboli or Bardini Gardens. Both are an oasis of tranquility with beautiful flowers, plants, trees, and fountains.
Picture yourself in the Middle Ages: Siena
Siena is a gorgeous walled medieval city and one of Italy's most beautiful cities, because of its ochre buildings with shades of red and a hint of orange. There’s a reason it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Just like other Tuscany cities, there are plenty of stunning churches and squares to visit. The Piazza del Campo, the beating heart of Siena, hosts the annual horse races. Tip: book a walking tour of the city so you don’t miss any of the sights. Afterwards, you can pick your favourite spots to spend a little more time or take some pictures. Siena is famous because of its 17 districts (contradas) which are taken very seriously. Every district has its own coat of arms and church. Challenge yourself and stroll through every district with their own bustling district lives!
Famous wine regions of Tuscany
Tuscany is not only famous because of its stunning rolling hills with cypress trees, it also offers fine wines. If you’d like to taste some of them, walk along the wine routes (Strade del Vino), which allow you to taste delicious wines along the way. Between Florence and Siena lies the Chianti region, which could well be the most famous wine region of all. Also in Montalcino and Montepulciano some of the most scrumptious wines are produced. Are you a wine lover? Make sure you book an accommodation in a wine region so you can enjoy a tasting session. Go out exploring and enjoy yourself!
