Book a flight to Madrid where mediaeval town houses and royal palaces form the backdrop of your city trip. Feed your eyes in one of the huge museums such as the Museo del Prado whose walls are graced with famous works of artists such as Picasso, Dalí and Miró. Madrid’s culinary delights are an essential part of any visit. Try traditional tapas under the centuries old arched ceilings. Not to be missed is the Botín restaurant near the Plaza Mayor - it is the oldest restaurant in the world! Get to know Madrid on foot. Or even better, on a segway! A segway will take you from the one sight to the other really fast.

Fly to vibrant Madrid

Apart from breathing in culture and enjoying the food, Madrid is also a great place to go shopping. Its enormous shopping streets are a mixture of chic fashion houses and the boutiques of local designers. After an afternoon of heavy shopping, drop into a comfortable chair in one of the friendly café terraces in the La Latina quarter. Night time means party time. Dance till dawn in Madrid’s cocktail bars and night clubs.

Transport to/from the airport

Madrid’s airport is located about 12 km from the city centre. You can travel to/from the airport by taxi, bus or metro.
  • Taxi

    There are taxi ranks at Terminals 1, 2,3 and 4 of Madrid Airport. The taxi journey to the centre of Madrid costs about €30. The taxi fares are higher on weekdays after 9 pm and in the weekend.
  • Bus

    The airport bus to the city leaves every 20 minutes. The journey takes about 30 minutes. The bus is very cheap at €2.40 including 2 suitcases.
  • Metro

    The metro is the cheapest way to travel to the centre of Madrid. Line 8 departs from Terminal 4 and goes to Nuevos Ministerios. The journey takes about 30 minutes.
  • Train

    There are trains to the centre of Madrid from Terminal 4. The train will bring you to Chamartín station within 10 minutes.

Transport in the city/region

Travel anywhere in and from Madrid:
  • Metro

    If you want to travel cheaply and easily throughout Madrid, then take the metro! There are 12 metro lines each of which has its own colour and number. A single fare is about €2. 

    Tip: You can also use the metro ticket in the city buses.

  • Bus

    The bus is very popular at night between midnight and 6 am when the metros do not run. If you want to visit other large cities such as Barcelona, then you can also take the bus.
  • Taxi

    You can hail taxis on the street in Madrid or pick them up at taxi ranks. They are white with a read diagonal stripe. If the green light on the roof is lit, the taxi is available.

There is no time difference between Madrid and the Netherlands.


The currency used in Madrid is the Euro (EUR).

Duration of flight

The flight to Madrid is about 2.5 hours. The outbound and inbound flights may be shorter if the wind direction is favourable.
