The whimsical Greek island of Cephalonia is a dream destination for hikers and nature lovers. And the beaches, such as Myrtos Beach, have crystal clear water. Marvel at the breathtaking beauty of Cephalonia!
Melissani Lake is one of the most famous sights of Cephalonia. It is an underground lake in a cave that is a whopping 163 metres long. What makes this lake so unique is that there is a large hole in the roof of the cave directly above the lake. When the sun shines through it, it creates a spectacular colour show. You can walk to the lake through a tunnel, but you can also take a rowboat and sail across the lake. The best time to visit is in the early afternoon, when the sun has reached its highest point. Be sure to keep your camera ready!
Myrtos Beach is the most beautiful beach in Cephalonia and perhaps one of the most beautiful beaches in all of Greece. Why? Myrtos has been a Blue Flag Beach for many years. This is an eco-label for high-quality beaches with clean water. Myrtos is also perfect for enjoying the sunset. In other words, you can find all the ingredients for a romantic day at the beach – all in one place.
The Drogarati Caves are dripstone caves in the north of Cephalonia. They consist of two rooms that you can access via a long walkway. It is delightfully cool in the caves, so this day trip is a great alternative to a hot day at the beach. The second room is particularly beautiful, with a surface area of around 2,000 square metres and fabulous acoustics. You might even catch one of the rare summer concerts held there.Talk about a unique location for a musical performance!
Fiskardo is a lovely harbour town and one of the loveliest sights in Cephalonia. It is pedestrianised so you can stroll along all the picturesque Venetian houses without a care in the world. Fiskardo is a protected traditional village, which means it has very strict rules for house construction. So, here you can see how Greek villages used to look in days gone by. Fiskardo also has a busy harbour, with ferries and sailboats coming and going. The perfect day trip!
Mount Ainos is the highest mountain on Cephalonia. Reaching 1,628 metres in height, it is also the highest mountain in the Ionian Islands. It’s perfect for hiking and admiring the unique plants that grow along the slopes of the mountain. The mountain and surrounding area together form a national park – with wild horses! They’re extremely shy though, so you have very little chance of spotting one.
