Safety requirements for hand luggage

Do you require lens cleaner on board or want to take shampoo with you in your hand luggage? Keep the safety requirements in mind. This way you can be sure that you do not have to leave anything behind at the airport, which would be a real pity!

What can you take with you in your hand luggage?

  1. Liquids and gels

Liquids and gels may only be taken in hand luggage in separate containers. These containers may be no larger than 100 ml. Place all items in a single transparent, resealable plastic bag, which holds no more than 1 litre. You may take one plastic bag per person.
  2. Baby food for use during the flight

Baby food does not need to be placed in a transparent plastic bag and you may take as much baby food on board as your baby requires during the flight.  You may take a maximum of 100 ml of boiled water (for mixing formula) in your hand luggage.
  3. Medicines and cooling elements for medicines

Medicines and any cooling elements for transporting your medicine do not need to be placed in a transparent plastic bag. You may take as much with you as you require during the flight. More information on medicines? Medicines on board.

Tip: Transparent resealable plastic bags that meet the European requirements can be purchased in various shops (such as supermarkets).

What are liquids?

Put simply, a liquid is any item with liquid contents. Examples:

  1. Water and other (alcoholic) beverages, syrup and soup.

  2. Perfume, gels, creams, lotions and aerosols.

  3. Toiletries such as toothpaste, shampoo, deodorant (also rollers), shaving cream and liquid make-up (such as mascara, lipstick and nail polish).

What can you expect at the airport?

You will have to pass through safety screening at the airport. You must show your transparent plastic bag with contents separately. Are the containers closed and easily fit into the resealable plastic bag? Perfect! Baby food, medicines, cooling elements for medicines, your coat or jacket and electronic devices (laptop) must be removed from your bag during the safety screening.

Tip: After the security screening, you can still buy liquids, such as beverages and perfume, at European airports. If necessary, your purchases will be sealed.
