White beaches, azure blue sea and the warm sun on your skin. During a beach holiday, you can completely relax. Do this as sustainably as possible, and you will be even more relaxed on the beach.

Your more sustainable beach holiday starts with choosing the destination. For example, choose a sunny destination in Europe, instead of a distant destination. Did you know that Europe has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world? You can also make environmentally conscious choices at the location. Read our tips for a more sustainable beach holiday!

1

Use sustainable sunscreen

During a beach holiday it is important to protect your skin well with sunscreen. However, the sunscreen ingredients end up in the sea while swimming, with harmful consequences for fish, coral and plankton. Therefore, choose a more sustainable alternative, made from natural products. For example, avoid ingredients such as oxybenzone and octinoxate and opt for a cream without microplastics. Then you are protected from the sun in a sustainable way.

2

Eat local seafood

Do you like eating fish on your beach holiday? Then try a local fish dish. Chances are that this fish comes directly from the sea where you swam that day. As a result, little transport is needed to get the fish on your plate. This is better for the environment, and you also enjoy delicious fresh fish and get to know the local cuisine.

3

Do a beach clean

Rubbish on the beach not only ruins the view, but it is also life-threatening for marine animals. Therefore, make sure you leave the beach clean or clean up the beach during a beach clean. Join an organised beach clean or take the initiative yourself: grab a rubbish bag and start. That way you leave your sunny destination even cleaner than you found it, and you enjoy your day at the beach even more.

4

Travel with hand luggage only

Lighter and therefore more sustainable on a beach holiday? Travel with hand luggage only. Because the less luggage you take with you, the less fuel we need. And that saves a lot of CO2 emissions. Those bikinis, shorts and thin T-shirts easily fit in a compact suitcase. With Transavia, your hand luggage can be max. 55 x 35 x 25 cm. Tip: buy your sunscreen locally and rent beach towels at the location.

5

Stay in a green hotel

Complete your more sustainable sun holiday with a sustainable hotel. From luxury eco-beach resorts to eco-glamping, there's plenty of choice. Green accommodation has a minimal or positive impact on the environment and involves the local population. When choosing a more sustainable stay, pay attention to recognised ecolabels, such as Green Key or EU Ecolabel.
