Go on a historic city tour, get to know the area by bike, or admire the city from another perspective while kayaking. These travel activities not only leave a lasting impression, but are also sustainable! We’ve gathered some tips for sustainable and fun activities when travelling.

1

Go for a walk

The easiest way to get to know your destination is on foot. You don’t even need anything for this activity, just some sturdy shoes and a hiking route. With the help of the free app Komoot, you can discover the most beautiful hiking routes within and outside of Europe. Filter based on city, distance, or difficulty level and choose between dozens of routes around you. Hike to the most gorgeous lookout point in Geneva, go on a historic tour through Prague, or discover Reykjavik, the most western capital city in Europe. Want more adventure? Challenge yourself with a long distance hike.

2

Go on an adventure with a kayak

Looking for a unique way to explore your surroundings without a car or public transport? With a kayak, you can experience a landscape from a completely different perspective. Float along the city canals in Bergerac or Split, for example, and admire the city’s architecture in a way that you are not used to. The city looks completely different from the water! Or go on a journey outside the city with the kayak. Many cities have waters surrounding them, which can take you away from the busyness of the city and help you unwind completely.

3

Explore your destination by bike

You can discover so much beauty while biking. After all, you cover a longer distance fairly quickly, allowing you to see different types of landscapes in one day. It’s more sustainable than a car, and you don’t miss anything from driving too fast. For instance, one moment you’re cycling through vast meadows and the next over forest trails. Rent a bike and make use of the handy Komoot app again. The app suggests the prettiest biking paths, whether you are going for a relaxing ride, a city tour with sightseeing, or a challenging mountain bike route through the forest. Want to know more about your destination? Then choose a cycling tour with a guide.

4

Do a beach clean-up

Going on holiday by the sea? There is a great chance that you will see litter lying around on the beaches. This rubbish travels by water across the world and is life-threatening to sea life. Do your bit by taking your own rubbish with you after a day at the beach. Or go for a bigger impact and clean up other people’s waste with a beach clean-up. You might find out that you inspire other people to do the same. And who knows, you might clean the whole beach together. Seabirds, whales and sea turtles will thank you!

Together, we can take small steps towards a future where more sustainable travelling is the norm. But to be fair, we have a long way to go. Want to know what we are already doing? Check out our page on sustainability.
