Travelling light is not only practical, but it's also more sustainable! If each passenger takes a kilo less luggage with them, together we save the amount of energy it takes for 80 washing cycles. We give tips for a lighter bag!
The less luggage we transport on the plane, the less fuel we need. So, traveling light is a choice with a big impact. For example, travel only with hand luggage, take a smaller bag with you and pack smartly.
No more hassle with large suitcases? With us, your hand luggage (max. 55 x 35 x 25 cm) can always be taken with you for free. Save CO2 emissions by travelling with hand luggage only and opt for a compact bag. It may seem obvious, but the smaller the bag, the less luggage you take with you. This way you travel comfortably – because there’s no dragging a heavy bag – and you contribute to the environment.
A (full) toiletry bag can weigh a lot of kilos and it is not allowed in the hand luggage. So buy toiletries locally: you can buy sunscreen, shampoo and soap everywhere. In addition, many hotels offer free shampoo and shower gel in the bathroom. Would you rather bring your own care products? Then only travel with small refillable bottles in your hand luggage, of a maximum of 100 ml each.
Do you devour multiple books when travelling? Paper books are heavy. Therefore, an e-reader is a better alternative. Then you can take as many books as you want, without extra kilos in your suitcase or bag. Want to travel even lighter? Read on your phone or tablet. By using these devices multifunctionally, you save even more weight and space.
The longer you travel, the more you want to take with you. By doing laundry once during your trip, you can halve the amount of clothes you take and save a lot of weight. Doing laundry on a trip often costs only a few euros and you can pick it up the same day. An additional advantage: when you return home, you have a smaller mountain of laundry to get through.
Want to save even more kilos? Take only necessary and multifunctional clothing with you. For example, choose garments that you can wear in layers on top of each other, rather than that one thick sweater. And make sure you can combine items with each other. Only take those trousers with you if you can wear them with at least three tops. And your cardigan or sweater for the plane is also a great solution for cooler summer evenings.
A smaller suitcase or bag fits fewer items. That’s great for reducing weight, but how do you get all your stuff to fit? Pack your bag smartly by, for example, rolling up clothes. Or use (vacuum) clothing bags to pack your clothes compactly. You will save space and protect your clothes. Another advantage: your belongings are sorted, so you never have to rummage through your bag again!
We want to inspire not only you, but also the travel industry to work together on more sustainable travel. But it’s fair to say that we’re not there yet. Curious about what we are already doing? Read more on our sustainability page.
