What requirements must the kennel meet for my pet in the luggage hold?

The kennel in which your pet is travelling must meet the following requirements:

* Dimensions: Maximum dimensions per travel carrier or kennel: length 102 cm x width 69 cm x height 76 cm.
* Weight: The maximum weight of your pet and kennel together is: 75 kg.

For the safety of your pet, it is important that the kennel meets the legal requirements of IATA (International Air Transport Association):

  • That is why it is important that the kennel or pet carrier is spacious enough for your pet to comfortably stand (without touching the top), turn around and lie down.
  • The kennel should be made from fibreglass or hard plastic. Wooden kennels, kennels with metal bars or kennels made of welded wire mesh are not allowed.
  • The door should be fitted with a central locking system that locks the door at both the top and bottom.
  • To ensure that the doors do not open during the flight, bring at least four (reusable) tie wraps per flight to the airport. Please note! Do not attach the tie-wraps yet at home or before going to the check-in desk. The employee at the check-in desk will tell you when to attach the tie-wraps. In fact, the kennel and pet may still have to go through security checks separately.
  • The closing pins of the door must extend at least 1.6 cm beyond the edge of the kennel at both the top and bottom. (B)
  • For large kennels of 102 x 69 x 76 (Size E), the top and bottom of the kennel should be bolted together (C). Any other locking system is prohibited for these kennel sizes.
  • It is not allowed to put (soft) (chewing) toys in the kennel.
  • Does your kennel have wheels? Make sure that the wheels can be dismantled or locked before travel so that the kennel is not able to roll around in the hold.

Tip: Ask at the pet shop for information about the permitted kennels and check our terms and conditions for kennels.
