Lanzarote belongs to the Canary Islands and consists of 4 islands. The main island is Lanzarote, home to the capital, Arrecife, and the popular resorts of Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca. The archipelago also includes the smaller islands of La Graciosa, Alegranza and Montaña Clara, which can be visited by boat.

Land at Lanzarote Airport after a flight of approximately 4 hours and 15 minutes. The airport is located to the west of the capital, Arrecife. You can reach the city in about 10 minutes by hire car or taxi. From Monday to Friday, a bus departs every 30 minutes to Arrecife, and on weekends, it runs every 60 minutes. The coastal resorts of Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca are around 10 and 30 minutes away by car or taxi. 

The best time to visit Lanzarote

It’s always spring in Lanzarote. Even in winter, temperatures remain around 20°C. August is the month with the highest temperatures and the most tourists. It’s also the festival month in the capital, Arrecife. During this time, Fiesta de San Ginés takes place, and the city celebrates for 10 days. Expect street parties, sports events on the beach and special bike rides. There are mountain bike races through the volcanic landscape and family-friendly cycling tours that allow you to explore the beautiful island.

Lanzarote’s must-see attractions

Lanzarote offers several highlights. The capital, Arrecife, is a vibrant city with modern architecture and historic charm. Along the harbour promenade, you’ll find many shops and restaurants. Dive into the lively nightlife in the popular coastal resort of Puerto del Carmen or cool off in the Atlantic Ocean. A must-visit is the pristine white beach at Playa Blanca, located on the southern side of the island. It’s a paradise for beach lovers and water sports enthusiasts alike. From here, you can also take a boat to Fuerteventura. This island is easy to explore by car and there are shuttle buses to many of the attractions. Other must-see sights on Lanzarote include:

• Timanfaya National Park: volcanoes play a significant role in the history and landscape of Lanzarote. You’ll feel like you’re on another planet in this nature park, with its volcanic landscapes, craters and lava fields. 
• Cueva de los Verdes: these caves were formed by volcanic activity. Explore this fascinating underground landscape on a guided tour. The caves were once used to shelter from enemies. The cave system stretches for 6 kilometres, running from a volcanic crater all the way to the coast. 
• Yaiza: this picturesque town in the south of Lanzarote is known for its traditional whitewashed houses and charming squares. It’s no wonder that Yaiza has been named the most beautiful place in Spain several times.
• Teguise: this is the former capital of Lanzarote. Every Sunday, a large market is held here where you can buy local products and taste traditional dishes. Try queso de cabra (goat cheese), chorizo de teror (a spicy, spreadable Canarian chorizo) and, of course, fresh fish. This is what a Sunday should be like!
