How do I safely transport the batteries of my electric wheelchair or mobility scooter with me when travelling?

Safety always comes first for us. That’s why it’s important to correctly transport the battery of your electric wheelchair or mobility scooter. Please follow these steps for safe and trouble-free travel:

Dry cell batteries:

  • Disconnect the battery*;
  • Prevent any short circuiting by insulating the poles with tape;
  • Fasten the battery firmly to your wheelchair or mobility scooter;
  • You don’t need any packaging for the battery.

*If you can’t disconnect the dry battery, you must turn off the main switch or master switch. Or there has to be a control unit which can be disconnected.

Wet cell (non-leakproof) batteries:

  • Disconnect the battery;
  • Package the battery as follows:
    • The packaging must be leakproof and contain enough absorbent material to soak up any battery acid;
    • The battery must be protected against damage by placing it in the cargo hold;
    • Prevent any short circuiting by insulating the poles with tape;
    • The battery must be fastened in an upright position in the packaging;
    • The packaging must have the following inscription: BATTERIES, WET, WITH WHEELCHAIR, have the hazard label: CORROSIVE and display arrow labels.
  • Fasten the packaged battery to the wheelchair or mobility scooter,
  • Make sure that your wheelchair or mobility scooter is transported upright (max. 85 cm high).

Lithium-ion batteries:

  • Disconnect the battery;*
  • Prevent a short circuit by isolating the poles with tape;
  • Place the battery in a protective plastic bag;
  • Take the battery into the cabin with you;
  • In addition to your disconnected battery of a maximum of 300Wh or 2 batteries of a maximum of 160Wh each, you may take another set of the same batteries as a reserve. That means 1 battery of a maximum of 300Wh or 2 batteries of a maximum of 160Wh each.

*If you cannot remove the lithium-ion battery from the wheelchair or mobility scooter, the battery must be properly protected from damage. The battery must also be securely attached to the wheelchair or mobility scooter.

Important: all batteries must adhere to the conditions and be clearly marked with their specifications, such as capacity. Make sure that the battery has the original factory sticker or that another proof of specifications is available. If this information is not clearly visible or available, the battery can be denied at check-in. This is done in order to guarantee the safety of all our passengers.
