Which travel documents do I need to bring?

International flights

  • Your passport or national identity card

Needless to say, you will need a valid passport or national identity card. You will not get much further than the check-in desk with an expired or damaged document. Check with the consulate for the country you are flying to or the website for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (French only) whether you require a passport or national identity card for your trip and how long it should be valid for. Please note: A driving license is considered a valid travel document for domestic flights only.

  • A visa

Not all destinations require a visa. Whether or not you require a visa depends not only on the destination, but also your nationality. In some cases, you are required to purchase a visa beforehand. So, make sure to check this well ahead of your trip by contacting the consulate or embassy for the country to be visited.

  • Are you a parent travelling alone with under-age children? Read through the additional rules carefully.
  • Are you taking your pet with you? Travel documents are also required for pets. More information can be found here.

Domestic flights (From France to France)

To travel in France on the domestic network, you will need an identity document such as your passport, national identity card or driver's license.

Family booklets are not accepted.

Important: Please note that any form of identification (passport, ID card, driver's license, etc.) must be presented in physical form. Digital copies of identification (photocopies, documents generated via the France Identité app, etc.) are not accepted. This rule applies to all flights, both within mainland France and international destinations (including Schengen area).
