What else should I take into account when flying with an assistance dog?
Before you fly
- Do not give your dog anything to drink 4 hours before departure.
- Do not feed your dog 12 hours before your flight to avoid your dog feeling sick.
- Although your dog may be a bit restless during the flight, it is not recommended to sedate your dog before the trip. This will make your dog less able to get used to new places. Its body temperature may also drop.
Always consult your vet about nutrition and any medication before the flight.
Good to know: the rules for assistance dogs vary from country to country. Before departure, make sure to research the specific rules of your destination.
At the airport
Please tell our staff at the check-in desk that you are travelling with an assistance dog. They will check your papers and are happy to assist you. You and your dog can stay together during security check. You may board earlier so that you can settle into your seat with your assistance dog.
Are you flying via Eindhoven Airport?
Please report to the information desk. An employee will check your assistance dog’s papers. You will then be given proof that the documents have been checked.
Dog walking areas
Be sure to walk your dog before the flight. At many large airports, there are special areas where your dog can go outside.
During your flight
Your assistance dog will sit at your feet without disturbing other travellers. If you are completely dependent on your assistance dog, your dog can walk with you on the plane, for example to the toilet.
Arrival at your destination
On arrival, you are allowed to disembark first, so that you can leave the plane comfortably with your assistance dog. Keep your assistance dog’s papers handy. You may need to show them.
